Some of the best opportunities for learning can be found in your own back yard, literally and figuratively. While you can go into your back yard and learn so much about science and ecology and such, you can also go to your local library and have the world at your fingertips!

Get your library card ready and get to the library. Be sure to let the librarian know that you are homeschooling, you will get extra time for the books you are using for educational purposes. Don't forget the video section. Our library has several National Geographic videos available for checkout.

In addition to the library, you can find an opportunity to learn something just about anywhere. You never know when you might get a private tour of a store stockroom or a question-and-answer session on butterflies. You have to learn to speak up and ask those questions that come up instead of shushing them. Remember to always be respectful of the other person's time and feelings. Not everyone and not every place is child friendly.

When you begin homeschooling, you begin to look at everything in a new light. You find yourself looking for learning opportunities in everything. After you've done it for a while, it becomes such a habit that the opportunities will seem to find you.

There are so many resources available for homeschoolers, both on the internet and off! If you are new to homeschooling, please take a few minutes to relax and think about all of the opportunities for learning that surround us every day. You don't have to spend a fortune if you don't want to.

*Who do you call at 1:30 in the afternoon when you are ready to pull your hair out because neither you nor your beautiful child can figure out new math?

*Who do you call at 10:00 in the morning when you just can't look at another book and want desperately to have some adult conversation?

*Who do you call when it's time to dissect anything and your stomach is too squeamish to even think about it?

*Who do you call when you need a cheerleader, a friend, a confidant, or just someone who understands?

If you are lucky, you can call on your family and close friends. Unfortunately, most homeschooling families don't have that luxury as they are not supported by their family and friends. Thankfully, as homeschooling becomes more mainstream, that is becoming less prevalant.

We encourage you to find a homeschool support group, or two..or three. Find at least one that you can do things with locally. As wonderful as the homeschooling lifestyle is, there will be those days in which you wonder why in the world you ever thought you could do this. It is on those days that you will need your support group the most. Pick up the phone and call someone (or sit down to the computer and email someone). A support group is one of the most important homeschooling resources you can find.

Getting Started

If you are new to homeschooling, or new to Florida, the thought of getting started can be daunting to say the least. We hope to provide the answers to your questions here. Please do not hesitate to ask questions of your fellow homeschooling parents, they are a wonderful resource. You will, however, want to check the laws yourself from time to time.

There are three ways to homeschool legally in Florida.

1. Register with your county school board and follow the home education statues. 1002.41 Home Education Programs

2. Enroll in a Private School that has a homeschooling option. This may also be known as a "Non-Traditional Private School", an "Umbrella School", or a "600" school. 1002.42 Private Schools

3. Use a certified tutor. 1002.43 Private Tutoring Programs

Whichever way works best for your family is fine, as long as you follow the rules!!
